Is Ardem PvP or PvE?

Last verified 20 August 2026 against the official Steam store page and playardem.com.

Quick answer

Both — it depends on the server. Techtive Games confirms Ardem supports PvE, PvP, PvPvE and modded/roleplay experiences, and that server owners customise the ruleset. If you never want to be attacked by another player, join a PvE server; if you want full risk, join PvP. Solo play is entirely PvE by definition.

Whether other players can kill you in Ardem is not a property of the game. It is a property of the server you join — and that makes it the single most important decision you make before investing time.

The four rulesets

Techtive Games confirms all four styles are supported and that server owners customise the ruleset. Mod support widens what a server can do further still.

Why the choice matters more in Ardem than most

Because of how much Ardem asks you to invest in fixed structures. This is not a game where your progress is a character sheet you carry with you. Your progress is a base with doors, roofs and furniture, an electrical system with generators or solar panels, crops and a repaired vehicle — all of which sit at a physical location on a persistent map.

On a PvE server, that investment is safe and the game becomes a rebuilding project. On a PvP server, that same investment is a target, and everything about how you play changes: where you site the base, how you split storage, whether you log out somewhere obvious. Neither is wrong. They are close to being two different games.

What the studio says about other players

Techtive Games includes a mature content note on the Steam store page describing Ardem as a multiplayer-centric sandbox where the behaviour of other players can be quite unpredictable, and provides options to disable voice and text chat. That is an unusually candid statement, and it is worth taking at face value when choosing a server.

How to choose

  • Pick PvE if the building, power and farming systems are what drew you to Ardem, or if your playtime is irregular and you cannot defend a base on a schedule.
  • Pick PvP if the tension of meeting a stranger on a road is the point, and you accept that everything you own is temporary.
  • Pick PvPvE if you want risk without total exposure — typically safe zones near spawn and hostile territory further out.
  • Pick roleplay if you want structure and community rules, and you are willing to read a server's rules before joining.
  • Run your own if none of the above fit. Private hosting is supported, with dedicated server files after launch.

A recommendation for new players

Start PvE, at least until you understand the systems. Ardem's genuine difficulty in your first hours is thirst, cold and carry weight, not combat — and learning those while also being hunted is a fast route to bouncing off the game. The beginner's guide assumes you are not being shot at.

You can test all of this for free during the public playtest on 15 October 2026, which needs no invite and no waitlist.

Key takeaways

  • Both — it depends on the server. Owners choose PvE, PvP, PvPvE or roleplay.
  • On PvE servers other players cannot kill you or raid your base.
  • This choice matters more in Ardem than most, because progress is invested in fixed structures.
  • Techtive Games notes other players' behaviour can be unpredictable, and allows chat to be disabled.
  • New players should start on PvE until the survival systems are familiar.

Frequently asked questions

Can other players kill me in Ardem?

Only on servers whose owner has enabled PvP. PvE servers exist as a first-class option.

Can players raid my base in Ardem?

On PvP servers that is the expectation. Rules are set per server, so check the server description before you invest days into a base.

Are there roleplay servers in Ardem?

Yes. Roleplay is explicitly listed as one of the supported server styles, and mod support widens what an RP server can do.

Can I switch a server from PvP to PvE?

Only if you own it. Rulesets are set by server owners, so as a player your choice is which server to join. Running your own is a supported option through private hosting.

Are there safe zones in Ardem?

On PvPvE servers, typically yes — that is what distinguishes them. Techtive Games has not described any global safe zone that applies on every server, because rules are set per server.
